Recommendations for the Best Tile and Granite Adhesives

Monday, 28 September 2026

Granite tiles can give a house a clean, modern, and elegant look. They are often used for floors, walls, kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of a building. However, installing granite is not simply about choosing a beautiful tile. The adhesive used underneath is also important.

A good adhesive helps granite stay firmly attached to the surface. The right product and installation method can also reduce problems such as hollow tiles, cracking, or “popping,” where tiles become loose and rise from the floor.

Why Can Granite Tiles Pop?

One common problem with ceramic and granite tiles is popping. This can happen for several reasons.

Temperature changes can cause tiles and the floor underneath to expand and contract. If there is not enough space between tiles, pressure can build up and push them upward.

Another problem is using an unsuitable adhesive. According to Eco Mortar, traditional cement and sand mixtures may have difficulty gripping the smooth and low-porosity surface of granite tiles.

Installation technique also matters. If adhesive is only placed in certain spots under the tile, empty spaces can remain underneath. These air pockets can create problems when the temperature changes.

Choose Adhesive Made for Granite

Using a specialized mortar adhesive is one way to improve installation. Eco Mortar recommends products designed specifically for granite and ceramic applications instead of relying on ordinary cement-sand mixtures.

For granite tiles, ECO 400 is designed for granite tiles and natural stone on both walls and floors. The product uses polymer technology intended to provide strong adhesion and reduce the risk of hollow areas.

For standard ceramic tiles on walls and floors, ECO 420 is designed for those applications. It contains cement, selected silica sand, filler, and polymer technology.

For areas that are permanently exposed to water, ECO 460 is designed for applications such as swimming pools, bathrooms, and basements.

Large Granite Needs Special Attention

Large-format granite requires extra care because the size and weight of the material can make installation more challenging.

ECO 475 is designed for large granite tiles up to 120 cm. The manufacturer says its polymer formulation helps reduce shrinkage and improve bonding between the tile and substrate.

For very large granite or marble slabs, ECO 485 is designed for big slabs up to 160 × 320 cm. It is intended for both interior and exterior applications and uses a high-level polymer formulation.

Installation Still Matters

Even a good adhesive cannot replace proper installation. The surface needs to be prepared correctly, while the adhesive should be spread evenly.

Eco Mortar recommends using a notched trowel and the back-buttering method, where adhesive is also applied to the back of the tile. This helps reduce empty spaces beneath the granite.

It is also important to leave enough grout space between tiles. For ordinary ceramic tiles, the source recommends a minimum joint of around 1.5–2 mm, while larger areas may require expansion joints.

So, when planning a granite installation, do not focus only on the appearance of the stone. The adhesive, surface preparation, tile size, grout spacing, and installation technique all work together. Choosing the right adhesive can help create a stronger and more durable finish for a construction or renovation project.
