When people think about building a house in Lombok, they may imagine a concrete villa, a modern tropical home, or a simple wooden bungalow. But what if your home could be made mainly from bamboo?
Bamboo houses are becoming an interesting choice for people who want a home that feels natural, unique, and connected to the tropical environment. One interesting example comes from Tetebatu, East Lombok, where architect Margarete Hilfinger developed a concept for a future bamboo home with her partner. The project started as a design study during her Bamboo U online course.
The idea was to create a two-storey family home that could be used for living, working, and entertaining guests. Instead of making a conventional house, the concept uses bamboo as the main structural material and combines it with open spaces and natural ventilation.
One of the most interesting features is the house’s design on stilts. This approach is especially useful in a tropical environment like Lombok because the elevated structure can help protect the house from heavy rain. The concept was also designed with earthquakes in mind, while natural ventilation allows air to move through the building.
The design itself is far from boring. The architect experimented with curved shapes for the ground floor and roof, creating a structure that looks like it is growing naturally from the ground. A central hyperbolic tower was also included to connect the roofs and help stabilize the structure.
So, what kind of bamboo would be used?
The project planned to use black bamboo, or Dendrocalamus asper niger, with a diameter of around 12 centimeters for the main structure. Another bamboo species, Gigantochloa apus niger, would be used for secondary construction, sometimes in doubled pieces or bundles. Split bamboo would be used to create curved elements, while bamboo strips could be used for the roof structure.
The interior would also continue the natural theme. Woven bamboo walls and indigo curtains were planned, while black fiber would be used for the roof. This combination could create a home that feels warm, simple, and very different from a typical modern building.
But building with bamboo is not simply about putting bamboo poles together. The material needs to be properly selected, processed, preserved, and designed according to structural requirements. The project received feedback from Bamboo U experts on structural elements such as beams, bracing, rafters, purlins, and roofing.
This is what makes bamboo architecture interesting. Bamboo can look simple and traditional, but with proper engineering and design, it can become part of a sophisticated modern home.
For Lombok, bamboo homes also fit naturally with the island’s tropical character. A bamboo house can provide a strong connection with nature while offering a different architectural experience.
Of course, anyone planning to build a bamboo home should work with experienced architects, engineers, and builders. Proper treatment, structural design, maintenance, and protection from moisture and pests are important for long-term performance.
In the end, a bamboo home in Lombok is more than just a unique-looking house. It can be a creative way to combine modern living, tropical architecture, and sustainable materials in one beautiful space.
