Installing wallpaper can instantly change the atmosphere of a room. A plain wall can become more interesting, warmer, and more stylish with the right pattern. But there is one part of wallpaper installation that can be surprisingly tricky: finishing the edges, especially around room corners.
If the wallpaper edges are not finished properly, the result can look messy. You may see gaps, overlapping paper, or uneven lines. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to make wallpaper edges look much cleaner.
One of the easiest approaches is to plan the wallpaper layout before starting. Do not wait until you reach the corner to figure out what to do. Measure the wall and decide where each wallpaper panel will finish. Good planning can prevent awkward narrow strips from appearing near the corner.
When you reach an inside corner, avoid assuming that the wall is perfectly straight. Most corners have small imperfections. Instead of trying to force one large sheet around the entire corner, it can be better to carefully measure and cut the wallpaper so it fits the shape of the wall.
A useful technique is to leave a small amount of wallpaper extending into the next wall. Press the wallpaper firmly into the corner using a wallpaper smoother or a clean tool. Once the paper is properly positioned, trim the excess carefully with a sharp utility knife.
The key word here is sharp. A dull blade can tear the wallpaper and create a rough edge. Change the blade when necessary, especially when working with thicker wallpaper.
For outside corners, the technique can be slightly different. Instead of wrapping a large piece around the corner, installers may carefully cut and overlap the wallpaper. The goal is to create a neat transition without making the seam too obvious.
Another important trick is to make sure the wall surface is prepared before installation. Wallpaper can hide some imperfections, but it cannot hide everything. Dust, bumps, holes, and uneven surfaces can make the finished wallpaper look less professional.
Before applying the wallpaper, clean the wall and repair obvious imperfections. A smooth and dry surface will make the installation much easier.
Adhesive also matters. Use an adhesive suitable for the type of wallpaper you are installing. Applying too much glue can make the wallpaper slide around, while too little adhesive can cause the edges to lift later.
Once the wallpaper is installed, pay special attention to the edges. Use a seam roller gently to press the wallpaper down without damaging its surface. If an edge starts lifting, deal with it quickly rather than waiting for the problem to become bigger.
You do not necessarily need complicated tools to get a good finish. A measuring tape, sharp utility knife, wallpaper smoother, seam roller, pencil, and clean cloth can already help a lot.
The biggest secret is patience. Wallpaper installation may look easy, but neat edges require careful measuring and cutting.
With good preparation and a little attention to detail, you can finish wallpaper around corners without making the room look messy. The result will be cleaner, more professional, and much more satisfying to look at.
